GST an opportunity for SMEs to leverage on technologies: Intel India MD

Adoption of GST is an opportunity for companies to leverage on technologies like Personal Computers (PCs) to automate their processors, said Intel India MD Prakash Mallya in his first interview after taking over the post in February of 2017.

Speaking on the growth prospective of PC penetration in India in his interview to The Economic Times, Mallya said GST is an example of how digitisation is helping in adoption of technology. The technological transformation in SME space seems to be significant post GST rollout, he said.

“If you look at PC penetration, it’s single digit today. Digitisation in India provides citizens to adopt technology. GST (goods and services tax) is an example. We have millions of SMEs (small and medium enterprises),” Mallya said.

Mallya also pointed out that personal computers are vital from a content creation, learning and education standpoint. He told that Intel is hence working closely with the Ministry of Human Resources Development to share the value of using PCs.

On being asked about start-up engagements, Mallya informed that Intel is engaged with companies that are in human resource space that are using AI. There are agriculture-oriented companies that are into ML and DL applications, he said.

As per reports, there are about 300 Artificial Intelligence (AI) start-ups in India, many of them doing work in healthcare, education, etc. Intel India had recently announced to train 15,000 people on developers, partners and ecosystem providers to democratize AI in India. The tech giant has alliance with online education providers for AI-specific courses.
