Indian start-up scene very important for Oracle CEO Safra Catz

Emphasizing the importance of Indian start-up ecosystem, Oracle CEO, Safra Catz on May 9 said the country has been the first to see start-up initiatives like an incubator, which has subsequently been launched globally.

“The last time I was in India I announced setting up nine incubation centers in the country and what we have focused on is not only making the technology platform available, we have taken it to the next level. We provide business advice and guidance. We started it here in India first and now we have taken it globally. India was the first for start-up incubation in the world for us,” said Catz.

In a rare media briefing, Catz said being a big company, you have economies of scale and massive resources. “However, what you do not have is the ability to be nimble. Even in large corporations, smaller ideas may not get enough resources,” she said.

Catz added that Oracle founder Larry Ellison wants to ensure that the company is benefiting from being enormous, but also benefiting from the opportunities of start-ups.

We want to nurture start-ups on our platform, just like we did in the old world. Most of the largest software companies in the world today are based on Oracle and they were once start-ups,” said Catz.
