Chatar Patar! Yes, Chatar Patar it is! The curiosity level increases if you are hearing this name for the first time. It would amaze you to know that the founder of Chatar Patar left his coding software job to start a business highlighting a street food.

Prashant Kulkarni, Co-Founder and Director of Chatar Patar Food Pvt. Ltd has always loved Pani Puri and other steet food since childhood. Did he know that Pani Puri would turn him into a big entrepreneur?

Chatar Patar is envisaged as a chain of eateries that serve hawker style Indian street food that is standardized, yet customizable, giving extensive width within its scope of products that is hygienically prepared and served. It is the house of India’s first branded golgappa known as GapagapTM and its signature product. Besides Prashant Kulkarni, it was co-founded by  Aarti Sirsat Kulkarni.

Idea

When Kulkarni was working at Infosys, roadside Pani Puri would always attract him that he would eat every day. However, he would always end up getting food poisoned. This upset him as much as it upsets any pani puri lover. After doing a lot of research about this food, he then came up with the idea to create a business using this mouth watering food. And later on he launched ‘Gapagap’, India’s first pani-puri brand.

Delicious Menu

There are different types of menu that attract people- 80 types of bhel, 27 types of chaats, pohas, etc, under Chatar Patar. Chatar Patar sells pani-puris in 112 different flavors. Some of the famous items include Maggi Gapagap: a combination of various tastes with the regular Maggi, Masala Fries: Indian street version of French fries, Chaatizza: Chaat+Pizza, Idli fries, idli chaat, and khakhra chat. Once tasted, nobody would forget the taste; which in return tempt the customer to go back and eat again.

Operations

Since the launch, Chatar Patar has grown rapidly. It has tied-up with Big Bazaar across states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, and has franchisees across these regions. Chatar Patar’s latest outlet has been opened in Ahmedabad.  Kulkarni also receiving enquiries from people outside the country like Australia, London etc.

The quick service restaurant (QSR) segment is growing rapidly in India. As per latest reports, Indian QSR industry is currently pegged at $1.36 billion in 2011, growing at a CAGR of 35% and pegged to reach $4.5 billion by 2015. Lifestyle changes couple with increase in spending power has resulted in boom in this market.

After  MBA, when Prashant Kulkarni planned to start Chatar Patar, people close to him were thinking that he was out of his mind. But, he never gave up. He had overcome all the obstacles that came along his way.
