Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said government would soon come out with a comprehensive defence procurement procedure (DPP) to boost defence production by India Inc, particularly by MSMEs.
Addressing a PHD chamber session on ‘Self Reliance in Defence Production, Parrikar acknowledged the role of MSMEs in India’s economy and more so in catering to the requirements of the defence sector.
“All the stakeholders including Chamber of Commerce and multiple industry association are being consulted to make DPP 2015 a perfect document and urged the industry to make India self reliant in defence production also using the opportunity provided by the new document which had simplified procedure.
Outgoing PHD Chamber president, Alok B. Shriram highlighted the critical importance of the defence sector and sought MSMEs participation in the area of defence production, pointing out that there are 40 million MSMEs in India. Out of these 6,000 registered, are contributing to defence.
“But these are not included in defence production due to existing technological gap. The new defence policy envisages allowing foreign investor to manufacture some portion in India, appealing that the DRDO and Defence institutions should incorporate MSMEs in defence production”, said Mr. Shriram.
The new PHD Chamber president, Mahesh Gupta, who assumed office Sunday, reiterated that MSMEs that contribute so much in production and employment should also be given participation in defence production and manufacturing.
