The vibrant Indian startup ecosystem has matured enough with the growing number of entrepreneurs and investors along with support from industries and academia to take it to greater heights, Ambassador of European Union (EU) to India Tomasz Kozlowski said on October 20.
Speaking at the Startup Europe India Summit 2016 (SEIS 2016), Kozlowski said the European Union’s decision to come up with SEIS is based on the realisation that in a globalised environment there is a need for closer interaction with various global partners.
“Bengaluru is the epicentre of knowledge innovation in Asia. Indian startups have come of age and they are building products for the global audience. The SEIS reflects the need for building an interconnected ecosystem to reflect on the increasingly interconnected digital world,” he said.
SEIS 2016 is an initiative of Startup Europe India Network (SEU-IN), a technology corridor, which is endorsed by EU and India in the Agenda for Action 2020 in the EU-India Summit in Brussels in March.
Kozlowski said SEIS is the second initiative from EU after its first venture with the United States in Silicon Valley. “The synergy has helped both European and US startups understand the ecosystem and come up with solutions to resolve issues,” he said.
He pointed out that even though individual members of the EU have their own initiatives in India, the SEIS will help startups across India get access to all the 29 countries as an individual market. “We have more than 6,000 companies in India providing direct employment to 1.2 million people and indirect employment to five million people. We want more synergy in the startup space,” he said.
