Mann Ki Baat: Khadi is not a fabric, it is an idea; PM pitches to popularise it


Using his Maan ki Baat platform which had just turned 3 years, Narendra Modi urged the people of the country to buy Khadi garments on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.


Mann Ki Baat- Khadi PM modiAddressing in the 36th Edition of Mann ki Baat, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi said that ‘Khadi’ is not a ‘fabric’ but an ‘idea’. Ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, the Prime Minister aims to take the movement forward and popularise Khadi.

Using his Maan ki Baat platform which had just turned 3 years, Narendra Modi urged the people of the country to buy Khadi garments on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

Modi also recalled the time when he had spoken about Khadi in one of his editions. He said, “Khadi is not a fabric, it is an idea.” he also said that he had noticed that these days interest in Khadi has increased very much.

“I had said that it is not necessary to have everything of Khadi only but if there are various kinds of fabric at home, why should Khadi not be one of them. It may be a bed-sheet, a handkerchief or a curtain. Experience shows that interest among the young generation for Khadi has increased,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister asked the people of the country to promote Khadi and take it to the next level. So far, the popularity of the fabric has also attracted the youth.

He urged people to buy clothes made of khadi to “light the lamp of prosperity in the lives of the poor.” By buying khadi, the Prime Minister said that the poor will be empowered, giving the example of Sewapuri Khadi Ashram at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh which was lying closed for 26 years but now it has got a fresh lease of life and employment was also generated.

Modi also expressed happiness that even big corporate houses have started including Khadi items as Diwali gifts. He said, “Even people have started exchanging Khadi items as gifts. We now experience how something grows naturally.”

According to the Prime Minister, the Khadi sale has also increased. “I once again urge that we should try and take forward the Khadi movement,” he said.
