Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has said as a developing country, the base of India’s growth and economy has to be manufacturing. Rijiju was addressing a gathering at ‘Manufacturing Conference-cum-Awards : Transform and Perform’, organised by apex industry body Assocham on August 22 in New Delhi.
The Minister said the sector has to make a huge jump by bringing together the entire industry and government machinery on board, for India to transform by experiencing its own industrial revolution phase.
“Services sector cannot be the basis of an economy. It can lift it up and take it forward, but to push the nation forward manufacturing has to be the base. And here’s where comes the role of the industry and its stakeholders,” said Rijiju.

Speaking on the relevance of small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing sector, the MoS said that the role played by SMEs in rural areas cannot be undermined. He added that the sector does not get the support it deserves, for which the Center and States are continuously striving through policies. The Minister also urged stakeholders to come forward with effective suggestions and solutions for the SME sector.
The MoS released two knowledge papers prepared by Ernst & Young and Assocham together, besides felicitating best performing states in the Indian manufacturing sector across categories such as Excellence in Manufacturing in North-Eastern States (shared by Assam & Tripura), Excellence in Manufacturing in Himalayan States (honoured to Himachal Pradesh) and Excellence in Manufacturing in Mainstream States (bagged by Karnataka).
Congratulations!
