According to a press release from the institute, the participation level and trainee days clocked were also very high at about 3,300 and 13,088 respectively, 10 per cent higher than last year. Out of these 113 training programmes, 84 were conducted in-house at BIRD’s sprawling campus in Bondel, Mangaluru, and 28 were conducted on various locations in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

Considering the importance of MSME and financial inclusion, about 17 programmes were conducted in these two areas for the benefit of bankers and NGOs. As women’s empowerment is a key area, the institute conducted two training programmes exclusively for women officers.

It conducted 17 programmes on demand from client institutions like commercial banks, RRBs and cooperative banks. New recruits and agricultural officers of banks like Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, Karur Vysya Bank and Andhra Pragathi Gramin Bank were trained by experienced faculty members of BIRD on various aspects of agricultural financing and orientation to rural banking.

Cooperative banks and RRBs held the lion’s share of participation in training programmes followed by commercial banks and NGO participants. Karnataka took maximum advantage of the presence of BIRD in Mangaluru.

Accordingly, the participation of the state in the year was about 30 per cent followed by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala with 18, 14 and 14 per cent respectively. The institute also roped in new states like Odisha, as its active participants this year. There was a very good response from the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh as well.

For the first time, a foray was made into the Union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands by conducting two training programmes on producers’ organisations and financing of joint liability groups at Port Blair. The institute also initiated academic collaborations with colleges like Sacred Heart College, St Agnes College and Canara College by associating in their national seminars and conferences.
