Edtech startups in India have changed the face of learning in the country. These emerging startups have restyled the mode of education preferences among students.

With the combination of availability of the smartphones and internet at a minimum price, these startups are allowing people to access learning anytime, anywhere!

A report published by startup data tracker Tracxn in January notes that over $9.86 billion (roughly Rs. 67,496 crores) has been invested in EdTech since 2006, one third of the amount was invested in 2015 alone.

Embibe

Embibe is an online test prep portal specialised in engineering entrance exams. It currently has more than 15k students on board.

Mumbai-based startup, Embibe started by Aditi Avasthi  in June 2012 with $700,000 in seed funding raised mostly from Avasthi’s family and friends. In December 2013, Kalaari Capital and Lightbox Ventures invested around Rs 24 crore.

Toppr

Toppr is an online subject-learning platform changing the way students prepare for IIT JEE, AIPMT, and Boards in India. The platform provides personalised and adaptive learning tests and practice packages to let students ascertain and improve their rank. Toppr has claimed about 690,000 registered students on its website.

Founded by Hemanth Goteti and Zishana Hayath in 2013 Toppr received Toppr raised $10 million from venture capital firms in April 2015, which is being used for improving technology and content.

SimpliLearn

Simplilearn founded in 2010 by Krishna Kumar  is one of the world’s largest professional certifications company with customers from over 150 countries. It started off on a global level which is different if compared to companies that started in India and then have tested it globally.

It offers over 400 courses from a panel of over 2,000 industry experts ranging from Data Science, Project Management, Big Data, Digital Marketing, SEO (search engine optimisation), and more.

The startup has so far trained over half a million professionals since its inception, and is named the eighth-most influential education brand in the world by LinkedIn.

BYJU

Byju’s learning app, launched by Byju Raveendran has been a gamechanger. It is now one of the India’s leading provider of supplemental school curriculum classes for classes 6-12 and test prep training for CAT, JEE, IAS, GMAT and GRE.

The app offers original content, watch-and-learn videos, animations and interactive simulations that help students grasp things easily and in a fun way. It generated revenue of about Rs 4 crore in its initial year of operation in 2011 and in just another 5 years it witnessed a phenomenal growth with revenue rise to Rs 120 crore in 2015-16.

Unacademy

Unacademy founded by Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini is the India’s largest free education initiative, which aims to index all the world’s education on its platform in all languages. It is one of the India’s most popular educational channel on YouTube, with 200,000 visits and 1.5 million pageviews a month

This year it has raised a $500,000 seed round of funding led by Blume Ventures.
