In a bid to ride on sudden spurt in Khadi’s popularity, the Government is working for technological and financial upgradation of Khadi industry.
“To modernize Khadi sector in country, Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has set up interfaces with leading technological institutes to conduct research work under S&T programme of KVIC for development of tools, implements and processes involved in production of Khadi.” said Union Minister of State, MSME, Giriraj Singh said in Rajya Sabha on November 16, 2016. He was replying to a question asked by Bupendar Yadv, BJP MP from Rajasthan.
On the first day of winter session, the Minister told upper house in a written reply that support is being extended to weak Khadi institutions under scheme “Strengthening Infrastructure of Weak Khadi Institutions and Assistance for Marketing Infrastructure” which is being implemented to attain normalcy and for renovation of departmental sales outlets of KVIC and State Khadi and Village Industries Boards and retail sales outlets of Khadi Institutions to increase turnover of Khadi products through improved marketing infrastructure. In order to meet the need-based support of the Khadi sector to nurse some of the sick institutions, this scheme started on July 14th 2009.
“Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) is implemented to make the traditional industries clusters including Khadi clusters more productive and competitive facilitating their sustainable development.” Singh added.
Referring to continuous increased Khadi sales, Singh said that this fiscal year has recorded biggest ever sales of Rs 1810 crore till date. Khadi sales growth was 8.6 per cent, 29.02 per cent respectively for 2014-15 and 2015-16. This year, it has been 19.87 per cent till date as per information available.
Recently, KVIC has also tied up with global cloth majors Raymond and Peter England to provide Khadi an international platform and modern design
