Skill India Mission: Maharashtra tops the skilling chart; UP & TN follow


Of total skill trained workforce in Maharashtra, 60 per cent women UP skills 8.5 lakh, while TN trains 8.45 lakh people across 1900 job roles


skill-indiaPlaying on the front-foot with an aim to skill as many as 4.5 lakh people by 2022, Maharashtra has emerged as the star performer under Skill India Mission of government by skilling more than 10 lakh people across 40 sectors in a span of about 6 years (as on June 30, 2017), as per figures provided by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

According to the data by NSDC, textiles, banking, finance, IT, ITES, electronics, hardware, gems and jewellery, beauty and wellness, and telecom were amongst the top sectors in the state to train for skilling  employable workforce in the age group of 15-59 years.

“Skill India mission is a positive step towards creating a skilled and employable workforce, providing better career opportunities to the youth across India. In a recent trend analysis, Maharashtra has emerged as a hub for skill training,” NSDC Managing Director and CEO Manish Kumar said.

The interesting fact is of the total skill trained people in the state, 60 per cent are women. The trainings were executed by Skill India affiliated private institutions, of which 75 per cent were imparted by NSDC funded partners.

The figures also reveal that following the topper state Maharashtra are Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as first and second runner-ups respectively in the Skill India report card. More than 8.5 lakh people were trained in Uttar Pradesh, closely followed by Tamil Nadu, which has empowered 8.45 lakh people with skill training, across over 1,900 job roles, based on the industry defined standards.
