Weavers of Banaras will showcase traditional weaving craft during the Make in India week in Mumbai beginning February 13.
‘Weaves of Banaras’, a special theme during ‘Make in India’ week, will exhibit the world famous craft and spirited skills of weavers of the city.
Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), in collaboration with Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), will host the Make in India week from February 13 to 16 at Mumbai’s ITC Grand Hotel.
Secretary of DIPP, Amitabh Kant said, “Banaras is not merely the fountainhead of civilizations but of textile fabric and weaving. In Banaras, the master craftsmen weave magic and create the most exquisite pieces using Indian colors and design”.
Banaras, apart from its temples, is also famous for silk handloom industry. Banarasi Sarees have been world famous for their intricate design using gold and silver threads with Katan.
With their intricate design and fully handmade work, these sarees can take up months to be made.
In 2009, Weaver Associations of Uttar Pradesh secured Geographical Indication (GI) rights for the Banarasi Sarees. The sarees known for their intricate zari work range from Rs 5000 to Rs 5 lakh depending upon handwork involved.
GI is a name or sign used on certain products that correspond to a specific geographical area.
