DigitalOcean, the world’s second-largest cloud computing provider, will set up its first India data centre in Bengaluru, in the April–June quarter of 2016.
The New York-headquartered firm, which is setting up shop in India, will invest $5 million in the data centre in Electronics City and is looking to hire a Country Manager, supported by a small marketing team that will be based out of Bengaluru.
“Ours is cloud computing platform targeted at the developer and start-up community. We have 11 data centres around the world and Bengaluru will host our 12th data centre. We will build a base capacity of 250,000 gigabytes of memory to support a couple of hundred thousand users to begin with, and then scale up as demand increases.
Globally, 600,000 developers have deployed their cloud infrastructure on DigitalOcean. We already have 58,000 registered users in India as of December 2015,” said Mitch Wainer, Co-Founder of DigitalOcean.
India is one of the company’s top five markets after the US, the UK, Canada and Brazil. Pointing out that India is home to the fastest growing ecosystem of start-ups and entrepreneurs, with approximately 4,000 start-ups launching this past year alone, Wainer said, “The number of software developers in India will grow to over 5 million by 2018, surpassing the number of developers in the US, clearly making the region one of the most important technology markets in the world.”
Until December 2015, the company had been adding 2,500 users every month in India, and expects that number to go up to 10,000 a month once the data centre is operational.
Droplet – the company’s branded term for a cloud server – is a compute resource that comes packaged with memory, storage, and bandwidth.
Pricing for India is the same as global rates – beginning at $5 per month for an individual virtual server at the entry level up to $640 – and is calculated on an hourly basis, guaranteeing that companies only pay for infrastructure resources that are actually being used.
The flexibility to quickly spin up servers via the company’s simple control panel or API is part of the special DigitalOcean experience.
