The proposal was sent by Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) to the ministry for establishing a centre to conduct research and development of MMF fabrics.

The Ministry of textiles is seriously considering providing a centre of excellence to Surat and establishing a textile park at Pinjrat, Ajay Tamta, Minister of state for textiles told a leading daily during the ongoing Surat International Textile Expo (SITEX) 2017.

The SGCCI has submitted a proposal for allocation of 80 lakh square meters of land for the mega textile park for establishing textile processing plants. As for the centre of excellence, it will help the MMF sector develop and manufacture different varieties of fabrics that have potential in the domestic as well as the international markets.

Tamta also said that the ministry is considering a project to produce raw linen on agricultural land in India with the assistance of textile and agricultural experts and scientists. India currently imports raw linen from Belgium. By reaping the crops in the country, Indian can produce raw material on its own to produce linen cloths. This can be implemented in Surat, according to Tamta.

Regional office of the textile commissioner, Ahmedabad and SGCCI have jointly organised SITEX 2017, which is currently underway in Surat. It aims to encourage the trade and industry of the South Gujarat region and promote the brand ‘Surat’ by highlighting the strength of the city’s textile Sector.
