Rs.43.56 crores earmarked for Coir Board, to enable exports worth more than Rs.1500 Crores

coirCoir Industry is an agro-based traditional industry, which originated in the state of Kerala and proliferated to the other coconut producing states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura, etc.

It is an export oriented industry and has greater potential to enhance exports by value addition through technological interventions and diversified products like Coir Geotextiles etc. The acceptability of Coir products has increased rapidly due to its ‘environment friendly’ image.

Coir Industry is a labour oriented industry which provides scope for generating maximum employment with limited investment. Coir industry in India is an agro – based rural industry. The industry plays a vital role in the economic development of rural areas of the coconut producing States. It also contributes significantly in empowerment of women in these regions.

At a press conference held at New Delhi, MSME Minister Kalraj Mishra sad that a sum of Rs. 43.56 crores has been earmarked for assisting Coir Board. This will increase the production of Coir products to more than 5.5 lakh metric tonnes. It will also be creating employment for more than 7.25 lakh people.

This allocation for Coir Board will help exports of more than Rs. 1,500 crore which will promote exports of coir yarn and coir products.
